Holding spares for fans we sold in 1998
Bearings, belts, impellers and motor frames for every fan built in the last twenty-eight years. The commercial argument for it is worse than you would think, and we are keeping it.
A ventilation fan installed properly will run for thirty years. The industry sells them on a fifteen-year design life and then obsoletes the spares at ten, which leaves a facilities manager with a working casing, a dead bearing and a quotation for a whole new unit plus the builders’ work to get it in.
We hold bearings, belts, pulleys, shafts, impellers and motor frames for every fan we have built since 1998. Where a bearing type has genuinely gone out of production we hold the drawings and a machining record so a replacement housing can be made rather than the fan scrapped.
The commercial case for this is poor. The stock ties up money, some of it will never move, and every unit kept alive is a unit not replaced. What it does buy is that when a hospital estates team rings us about a 2003 extract fan, the answer is a part number and a next-day delivery rather than a capital request. That has been worth more to this business than the replacement sales would have been, and it is not up for review.
