A smoke extract fan has one job and it happens once. Everything about the specification exists so that the fan is still turning after ninety minutes in air that would have destroyed an ordinary unit in ten — a motor wound with high-temperature insulation, bearings greased for the duty rather than for the shelf, a casing that will not distort enough to jam the impeller as it expands, and cable entries that survive the same.
EN 12101-3 classifies these by temperature and time: F300 is 300°C for 60 minutes, F400 is 400°C for 120, F600 is 600°C for 60. Those ratings are only meaningful when a notified body has watched the test. We hold current certificates for eleven fan and motor combinations, and each nameplate carries the certificate number so a building control officer can check it rather than take it on trust.
The part that goes wrong on site is almost never the fan. It is the wiring, the fire-rated cabling, the damper interlocks and the control panel — and a certified fan on an uncertified installation is not a certified system. We will review your control philosophy at tender stage for nothing, because we would rather do that than be blamed at handover.
