Where these fans work

A 12 m³/s extract duty is the same aerodynamic problem in a car park and in a bakery. What changes is the material, the certification, the access for maintenance and what happens on the day it stops.

  • Tunnels & metro

    Longitudinal and semi-transverse schemes, reversible axial and jet fans, and the fire case modelled rather than assumed. Nine schemes since 2019.

A worked example

Barrowfield multi-storey, Doncaster

Four levels, 620 spaces, and a soffit-to-slab depth of 2.4 metres that a ducted extract scheme would have eaten 350 millimetres of. The original design had 460 metres of galvanised duct at level 1 alone.

We modelled the structure as built — downstands, ramp, core walls and all — and replaced it with 34 impulse fans at 50 N and two 14 m³/s extract units at the ramp head. The CFD showed two corners that would not have cleared with an evenly-spaced layout, one of them the corner containing the CO sensor; four fans moved about six metres from where a plan-view layout would have put them.

Delivered in eleven weeks, commissioned across three days, and signed off by building control at first submission. The measured clearance time on the worst level was 4 minutes 20 seconds against a 10-minute requirement.
